Different innovative systems have been developed and tested in order to prevent a Landslide in lignite open pit mining, in an inexpensive way, with high-resolution images. In this project, one of the most promising acquisition techniques is represented by the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with a high resolution digital camera. The project deals with the acquisition and processing of low-height aerial imagery acquired by UAVs, in order to provide large-scale mapping to support the field work in lignite open pit mining landslide. Two months after this work a huge landslide occurred on September 14. There were no fatalities. Geological engineer says this was the largest landslide for all open mining activities in Greece.
